May Gurney launches national community fund – two Norfolk charities are first beneficiaries
Charities across the UK are set to benefit from a cash boost thanks to the generosity of a leading local business.
May Gurney, the national infrastructure services company, has launched a £300,000 national community fund called The May Gurney Foundation, to help charities over the next three years. The Foundation has just made its first awards to two Norfolk charities, with a commitment to donate at least another £20,000 in the county by March 2010.
The first recipients of grants are MOVE ON east and Community Action Norwich.
MOVEON east has received £2,500 which will boost the charity’s support for former offenders, who are given help to find accommodation, master life skills, and access tuition, training and employment opportunities. MOVE ON east will spend the money on IT equipment with the aim of getting ex-offenders into employment, helping to improve their quality of life and to prevent re-offending.
Community Action Norwich has been awarded £5,000. The charity tackles issues of youth crime, poverty, substance addiction, family breakdown and isolation of the elderly in the Lakenham and Tuckswood districts of Norwich.
The grant will be used for the STEP programme, providing support to those who face an uncertain future and the possible return to being a victim of an exploitative lifestyle. In particular, it will help those who face difficulties around issues of poverty, abuse and substance misuse. The award will underwrite the salary of an outreach worker.
Amanda Payne, Director of MOVE ON east, said: “We are extremely grateful for the generous donation from The May Gurney Foundation. It will pay for computer equipment to help ex-offenders write CVs and apply for jobs on-line. It will also help boost IT skills, which are essential for the workplace and help break the cycle of reoffending.”
Theresa Cumbers, Programme Director of STEP at Community Action Norwich adds: “This award will make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable people in Norwich. Funding an outreach worker means we can provide one-to-one support for clients at home, and help them to create a brighter future for themselves and their families. This is such an encouragement to the team who tirelessly facilitate this project.”
May Gurney, whose head office is in Norwich, has launched The May Gurney Foundation with support from the Norfolk Community Foundation, an organisation which administers and manages charitable donations between businesses and local communities.
“We strongly believe in giving back to our communities,” said Ian Findlater, Business Development Director at May Gurney.
“The May Gurney Foundation will support community based charities and good causes which help young people and the long-term unemployed get into work. Our Foundation focusses on improving opportunities for people in terms of education, self help, health and wellbeing as well as supporting local environment issues.”
Ian added: “We have committed £100,000 per year to charities in areas where May Gurney works. This year we are donating money in Norfolk, Sussex and Devon. We have also made £15,000 available to match fund employees’ own fund raising activities for local and national charities.”
Grants will be awarded to charities twice a year by a board of trustees made up of May Gurney employees, and independent experts linked to the charity sector.
If you are a Norfolk based charity, and would like to find out if you are eligible for May Gurney’s funding please contact Graham Tuttle at Norfolk Community Foundation on (01603) 623958.

Only last month the Ministry of Justice published a report which demonstrated that community sentences cut re-offending by 13%. By contrast, more than two thirds of prisoners will commit more crimes within two years of leaving jail. It’s about time we paid some attention to the success stories in criminal justice.”

Risk Sharing
I agree totally with Lord Adebowale's reported comments (Third Sector 13th June 2007) that the risks involved in delivering public services should not be borne entirely by charities. If the commissioning bodies are not prepared to accept the full risk, charities should at least be entitled to charge a "risk premium" on top of the standard contract price.

The Easy Learning Project will introduce new ITC and E-learning opportunities to Norfolk Offender Learning and Skills. The Project will enhance Move On East’s core offender services through new blended e-learning opportunities within Skills for Life, Employment Service and Life Skills provision as well as first-rung courses in ITC. The Project will breakdown offenders perceived barriers to using ITC, promote the use and scope of ITC in everyday life and offer a range of activities from non-accredited introductory courses to certificated learning up to Level 1.

Towards the end of 2005, Trevor Williams (above) was appointed Regional Offender Manager (East of England), National Offender Management Service.
