Horticulture allows the development of literacy and numeracy in a practical, hands on manner. Using an allotment close to the centre enables us to involve clients in measurement activities, reading text and working with numbers in an outdoor practical environment from which they can gain crops for their own consumption – or – food to eat?

Web sites such as www.move-on.org.uk give links that further connect the external practical work to theoretical test material, whilst the BBC gardening website www.bbc.co.uk/gardening allows an instant source of all kinds of gardening information.

Who could become involved?

Any person currently linked to Move On East could become involved, and use the scheme to help them gain practical and theoretical experience. No age restrictions
